Two Octobers ago, Katy and I spent a cool, sunny morning at Pine Grove Furnace State Park in Cumberland County, Pennsylvania. With the leaves turning again this week, I went back through the photos and video from that day, and I had to share them.

Our first stop was the old iron furnace the park is named for. It was built back in 1764 and made iron until the 1890s, and the big stone stack is still standing today.

From there we walked over to Laurel Lake. The water was calm, the clouds were reflecting off it, and the hills all around had turned red, orange and gold.

At the end of the lake is the spillway, where the water pours over the old dam. The lake was first made by a dam back in 1830 to power an iron forge. I put together a short video of the lake and the spillway so you can see and hear it for yourself.

Packing for a Fall Day Trip
Heading out for a day of leaf peeping? A few things worth bringing along:
- A classic Stanley thermos for hot coffee on a cool morning
- A good cooler for a picnic lunch by the lake
- A folding camp rocker to sit and enjoy the view
- Binoculars for birds and fall color across the lake
If you’re looking for a fall drive this year, Pine Grove Furnace is a great day trip. Where are you heading to see the leaves this fall? Let me know in the comments.
