The weather finally cooperates, with dry, mild days all the way through Tuesday. That makes this a great stretch to get out. There’s a hometown Halloween parade, a full moon over the Blue Ridge, and on Tuesday every national park around here is free. Here’s what Katy and I have our eye on.

Tuesday is a fee-free day for U.S. residents at National Park Service sites, in honor of Theodore Roosevelt’s birthday. That means no entrance fee at Shenandoah (normally $25 a motorcycle, $30 a car), Great Falls, Prince William Forest Park and the C&O Canal. Old Rag still needs its separate $2 day-use ticket. A free entry day on a weekday, during leaf season? Doesn’t get much better. Enter at Front Royal, ride south to Thornton Gap, and drop down to Luray or Sperryville for lunch. Lower elevations should still have good color. Layers, because it’s always colder up top.

Let’s Talk About Space + the Hunter’s Moon

A space talk with stargazing if the clouds cooperate. The full Hunter’s Moon comes overnight Sunday into Monday, so even if it’s too bright for faint stars, a big moon rising over the Blue Ridge is a sight. Also, Sunday is the last day for Skyland Stables trail rides this season. Details
