We didn’t roll into DuBois until late, and by then we were all running on empty. After a long day on the road, all we wanted was a good, hot meal and a place to sit down for a while. Right off the road we spotted the red-and-white striped awnings and the glowing sign of Valley Dairy, and that settled it.
It’s a classic family restaurant with an ice cream counter, the kind of place that feels like a welcome sight when you’re tired and hungry. I ordered the cheesesteak sub, and it was very good: just what I needed after that drive. My mother-in-law, Ollie, had the cheesesteak sub too, and she loved it. Katy went with the fish, and it was a big portion. She had plenty to eat and thought it was good, too.
Sometimes the best stops are the ones you don’t plan. If you find yourself in DuBois at the end of a long day, Valley Dairy is a good, comfortable place to refuel, and you won’t leave hungry.
