A Fall Cabin Week in DuBois, PA: Our Treasure Lake Trip, Start to Finish

This October, Katy, my mother-in-law Ollie and I spent a slow, cozy week in a log cabin at Treasure Lake, just north of DuBois, Pennsylvania. The leaves were right at peak, the deer came by every day, and we had nowhere we needed to be. I posted along the way, so here’s the whole trip in one place, with links to every post.

The Trip at a Glance

  • Where: Treasure Lake, about 8 miles north of DuBois in Clearfield County, PA
  • When: Mid-October, right at peak fall color
  • Who: Katy, Ollie and me, with my sister Corilee and Grant joining us for a night
  • Drive: About six hours from Northern Virginia
  • Best for: A slow week of lake views, wildlife, campfires and small-town coffee

Settling In

We rolled into town on Fall Fair Trail day and grabbed a late dinner before heading up to the cabin. The cabin itself was the star of the trip: round logs, a tall stone chimney, a great room with a log cathedral ceiling, and the lake just down the lawn.

Coffee Runs and a Rainy Day

You know I can’t go a day without my Starbucks. Sunday was a soggy one, so it was coffee first, then a lazy day at the cabin watching the rain over the lake. Monday was the same coffee run, just with clouds instead of rain.

Deer in the Yard and Nights by the Fire

The deer at Treasure Lake stopped by every morning and every evening. Katy got some great video of them. At night we had a real wood fire going in the big stone fireplace.

Family Time at the Lake

My sister Corilee and Grant came to stay the night. We took family photos on the dock, spent a slow day by the water, and had plenty of time with morning coffee on the deck.

Day Trip Ideas Near DuBois

If you’d rather get out and explore, there’s plenty close by. These are the spots we lined up before the trip:

  • Elk Country Visitor Center in Benezette: the best place to see the elk, especially during the fall rut. Sunday in Elk Country
  • Bilger’s Rocks and Parker Dam State Park: a 300-million-year-old “rock city” and a classic state park lake. Monday Outdoors
  • Punxsutawney and downtown DuBois: Phil’s hometown and a stroll through town. Last Day Near DuBois

The Last Mornings

The trip ended the way it started, with coffee and a pink sunrise over the lake, geese flying in, and the trees glowing. I’m already missing it.

Tips If You Go

  • Go in mid-October for peak color. The leaves up there turn a week or two before Northern Virginia.
  • Pack layers. Mornings on the deck were chilly, and afternoons warmed up nicely.
  • Plan a rainy-day backup. A good coffee shop, a fire and a few movies go a long way.
  • Look up early and late. Sunrise over the lake and the deer at dusk were the best parts of every day.
