How-To: Programming a Repeater into a Baofeng UV-5R from the Keypad

If you have ever stood in a parking lot at a hamfest with a brand-new UV-5R and no programming cable, this one is for you. Andy Ludlum, K6AGL, wrote up a clear, numbered walkthrough on the CVARC club site for entering a repeater into a memory channel using nothing but the radio’s own buttons.

His guide takes you from frequency mode through setting power, offset direction, offset amount and the CTCSS tone, then shows the trick that trips up so many new hams: storing the receive and transmit frequencies into the same channel. He also covers setting up a simplex channel, adjusting squelch and deleting a channel, plus a friendly warning to stay away from Menu 40, which resets everything.

I like having a guide like this saved on my phone for those moments in the field. Just swap in your own local repeater’s details.
