Happy Monday, adventurers! ๐Ÿ Today is all about getting outside in Clearfield County. Two spots near DuBois are on our list, and both are perfect for a fall weekday.

Morning: Bilger’s Rocks

Geologists call it a “rock city”: about 20 acres of 300-million-year-old sandstone with formations up to 50 feet tall, plus caves, narrow passages, and arches you can walk and squeeze through. Trees grow right out of the rocks with their roots snaking around the boulders. Wear sturdy shoes, and bring a layer, since it’s chillier down in the crevices.

Afternoon: Parker Dam State Park

๐Ÿ“ 28 Fairview Road, Penfield ยท (814) 765-0630

Parker Dam is a classic old-fashioned state park: a scenic lake, rustic cabins, and miles of forest on the edge of Moshannon State Forest and the Quehanna Wilderness. Walk the lake, then stop at the small Civilian Conservation Corps museum near the dam to learn about the CCC crews who built so much of Pennsylvania’s park system. The park also demonstrates apple-cidering each October, so call the office to see if there’s a demo while we’re in town.

Good to Know

Today is Columbus Day / Indigenous Peoples’ Day, so some offices and businesses may keep holiday hours. Pack snacks and water, since Bilger’s Rocks has no restrooms on site. Both stops are an easy drive from DuBois, so you can be back in town for dinner. ๐Ÿฅพ
